Title

Discernment

Scripture
Folly is joy to him who is destitute of discernment, but a man of understanding walks uprightly.
(Proverbs 15:21)
Devotional
To be without discernment is a sin. Consider the company it keeps: "Undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful."[3] There is a special gift of discernment that not every believe has, which is, "The discerning of spirits."[4] Nevertheless we are to acquire good judgment and insight. We are to be observant of our surroundings and the people with whom we frequent. We are to be able to discern those things that are good for us as well as the bad. From movies to music and beverages to food, we for the most part understand the healthy and unhealthy. Those who joyously brag about the folly of their poor eating habits or lack of physical care are an example of the lack of discernment of which our text speaks. The apostle James defines it this way, "To him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin."[5]
