Title

Measuring Desires

Scripture
This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work.
(1 Timothy 3:1)
Devotional
One way of knowing our calling and giftedness is through the things we desire. Yet, desires must be checked and weighed by our motives. For example the office of a bishop is one that oversees; he is a leader. The question that needs to be asked of ourselves and of anyone who would desire this position is, "why do I desire it?" if it is for recognition, honor, title or any self-serving reason it is an inordinate desire. If the reason is to minister, edify and win others to Christ and His kingdom it is an appropriate desire. God in His goodness likewise gives the qualifications for this office in the verses that follow. No matter what the desire, if one does not qualify for the position the desire at that time is an inappropriate desire. Either some maturing needs to be accomplished or the desire is again, inordinate. Most likely it is the former; a time of maturing is needed. Therefore one is to rise to the position before the position is acquired.
