Title

More Than Skin-Deep

Scripture
Thus it was beautiful in greatness and in the length of its branches, because its roots reached to abundant waters.
(Ezekiel 31:7)
Devotional
True beauty is much more than skin-deep. True beauty reaches down to the depths of our souls. Who we are is more than what people see. Who we are is not dependent on the proverbial length of our branches, but the depth of our roots.
Therefore, let us ask ourselves in what are we rooted? Where do we secure our nourishment? I am not talking about merely physical nourishment, but mental, emotional and spiritual nourishment. To maintain godly beauty we must be rooted in Christ, not religion or ministry, but Christ and Christ alone. Any other source is rooted superficially. We mistakenly attempt to beautify ourselves from the outside in. This produces a shallow facade. The apostle Peter said it this way, “Do not let your adornment be merely outward - arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel - rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.”(1)
