Title

When We Keep Score, Someone Looses

Scripture
If You, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?
(Psalm 130:3)
Devotional
The answer to the psalmist's rhetorical question is, "No body." If God kept score we would all lose. Likewise if we keep score, no one would be able to stand up to our measure. If we say that we love each other and we keep score against each other we have an inordinate love. "Love… keeps no record of wrongs.”[1] Scorekeepers cannot be beaten, nor can they ever win. You cannot reason with them nor can you hold them to a point. Attempting to reason with a scorekeeper is like attempting to grasp a whirlwind; as soon as you think you are making headway, it changes direction. If you are a scorekeeper, sooner or later the scores you keep will turn on you and you will lose. Keeping score is like stacking straws; eventually there will be the proverbial straw that breaks the camel’s back. Therefore refuse to keep score or war with a scorekeeper. Deal with one point at a time. Resolve the conflict at hand and keep the score at love.
