Preparing New Leaders

Scripture
But command Joshua, and encourage him and strengthen him; for he shall go over before this people.
(Deuteronomy 3:28)
Devotional
Here we find the formula for the training of leaders. We are to direct them, encourage them and strengthen them. We direct them by telling and requiring the truth. Direction demands obedience and accountability. In addition to giving commands, we must also encourage. We encourage by rewarding what is accomplished. We do not encourage by accepting failure or mediocrity. The phrase, “You can do better,” is a great encouragement. It says, that there is room for growth, and that you have not reached your full potential. To an upcoming leader, this is very good news. Furthermore, we are to strengthen those whom we mentor. We strengthen them by exercising their abilities, talents and giftedness. The best training is done by giving a task and the responsibility to accomplish that task through the avenue of accountability. This is how Moses trained and prepared Joshua, and Joshua became a likewise great leader.
