Title

The Purpose of Leadership

Scripture
Moses spoke to the Lord, saying, Let the Lord… set a man over the congregation.
(Numbers 27:15-16)
Devotional
Moses, the leader of the nation of Israel, was taken to the top of a mountain to see the Promised Land. God showed him the land that he would not enter. The godly character of Moses is once again revealed. Instead of pleading his case so that he might enjoy the fruit of his labor, his concern was for a successor to his leadership. This is the sign of greatness in leadership. The position is not as important as the task. Moses knew that the people needed a leader. Therefore, he sought someone to mentor for the position. Before he left he had Joshua take over certain areas of leadership. He furthermore honored Joshua before the people so that when he departed they would follow him. Moses did not set himself up as an irreplaceable monarch. He immediately sought an heir to disciple and lead the people. Moses understood that leadership is not an end to itself. Leadership is to accomplish the will of God in the ones being led.

On March 14th, Jeff said:
Amen, godly leadership does not concern itself with legacy but the flock. Even the apostle Paul in Acts 20 warned of leaders are rising and to remember the Apostles words. "For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears." (Acts 20:27-31 KJV)
