True Value

Scripture
The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, and a man is valued by what others say of him.
(Proverbs 27:21)
Devotional
This is an unfortunate fact of life, that our value is measured by what others say or think about us. Jesus said, “Woe to you when all men speak well of you, For so did their fathers to the false prophets.”(1) What matters more than man’s opinion is God’s.
Look at the people of scripture who were rejected by man, but accepted by God. Consider Moses, Lot, David and Jeremiah. These men were rejected by their own, hunted as enemies and imprisoned for their prophecies.
Flattery, praise and compliments are the furnaces and refining pots of our character. If we endure them in humility we will test as pure gold and refined silver. In a clear vernacular, don’t let it go to your head. Those that easily laud you one day will just as easily curse you the next. The only praiseworthiness we have is Christ in us the hope of glory.
