Keep Your Vows

Scripture
Better not to vow than to vow and not pay.
(Ecclesiastes 5:5)
Devotional
This proverb is so clear, so plain, yet so many foolishly fail to heed it. From wedding vows to a vow to pay, we seem to be a people who readily violate a covenant, let alone our word. Jesus said, "Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No' be 'No’” In essence we are simply to do what we say we are going to do. If for any reason we are unable to keep our word, we should not attempt to make excuse, we should simply repent. Saying I’m sorry does not nullify a vow. Nor does repentance excuse us from attempting to keep our word. Repentance is a turning from sin. It is making right a violation. If you have obligated yourself with a vow, the only way to be released from that vow is by way of forgiveness. Therefore if you have been rash in making a vow, if you have erred with your mouth, confess you sin and seek forgiveness. If forgiveness is not granted, pay your vow.
